Shala Etiquette: What to Know Before You Come
-
Arrive before class begins and settle on your mat. If you're late, enter quietly and respectfully.
-
Practice in silence. The Ashtanga method is a moving meditation - please keep talking to a minimum.
-
Come clean. Good hygiene is a form of respect for yourself and others. Please shower before class and use unscented products.
-
Wear clean clothes that do not seek attention.
-
No shoes in the practice space. Leave them at the door.
-
Bring a towel and mat, and respect personal space - place your mat with awareness of others around you.
-
Inform the teacher of any injuries, health issues, or if you’re menstruating and modifying your practice.
-
Drink water - lots of water, AFTER class, NOT during, and preferably warm water.
-
Silence all cell phones.
About your instructor

Val Jett has been dedicated to the study and practice of Ashtanga Yoga for over a decade. Her teaching is rooted in the traditional Mysore-style method as passed down through her teacher, Angela Jamison, of AYA2 in Ann Arbor, MI, a long-time student of R. Sharath Jois - the late director of the Sharath Yoga Center in Mysore, India, and the foremost living authority of the Ashtanga lineage during his time.
With a deep respect for the discipline, structure, and transformative power of the practice, Val approaches teaching as a way to help others develop strength, focus, and self-awareness - both on and off the mat. Her classes emphasize breath, alignment, and consistency, honoring the traditional method while making the practice accessible to all levels.
